Otto Berkes
Otto Berkes, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at CA Technologies

As EVP and chief technology officer of CA Technologies, Otto Berkes is responsible for technical leadership and innovation, further developing the company’s technical community, and aligning its software strategy, architecture and partner relationships to deliver customer value. Otto joined CA on June 15, 2015. As a 25-year industry veteran, he has a passion for innovation and development. He has extensive experience leading the development of cutting-edge products and technologies. An early champion of mobile computing, he led the development of touch-based technologies, user interfaces, hardware architectures, and physical designs that were the forerunners to today's tablets.

Before joining CA, Otto served as the chief technology officer at HBO, where he directed efforts that created and delivered innovative digital technologies and products such as HBO GO®. During his tenure, HBO GO became one of the most popular streaming services in the U.S. Previously, Otto spent 18 years at Microsoft and was one of the four original founders of Xbox. As Xbox's first architect, he led its technical direction. He started his career at Microsoft as a senior software developer, where he worked on the first version of the Windows NT operating system, and re-wrote Microsoft's OpenGL implementation. He led Microsoft's OpenGL and DirectX graphics development groups in Windows during the formative years of the evolution of the modern GPU.

Earlier in his career, Otto served as a senior developer at both Autodesk where he wrote the graphics engine and user interface for the first Windows-based version of AutoCAD. An advocate of diversity, he is a member of the University of Vermont’s STEM leadership council where he is focused on addressing gender, racial, and economic gaps across all of the STEM disciplines. Otto earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Middlebury College in Vermont and a master’s degree in computer science and electrical engineering from the University of Vermont. He is co-inventor on and holds multiple patents spanning design, mobile device interaction and core computing technologies.

Mary Lynn Manns
Dr. Mary Lynn Manns, Professor at UNC Asheville and Author

Dr. Mary Lynn Manns is a professor in the Department of Management at UNC Asheville and the co-author of two books, Fearless Change: Patterns for Introducing New Ideas, 2005 (also published in Japanese and Chinese) and More Fearless Change: Strategies for Making Your Ideas Happen, 2015. Mary Lynn has given numerous presentations on change leadership throughout the world in many organizations that include Microsoft, Proctor & Gamble, Avon, and amazon.com. On campus, she coordinates the "Ideas to Action" initiative at UNC Asheville, which guides students as they work in interdisciplinary teams to design, develop, and defend their ideas for changing the world. Russell Rutledge
Russell R. Rutledge, Community Core Team Lead, Nike

Russ Rutledge is the lead for Nike's Community Core team—a startup within the company that culls the process and tools to encourage and foster cross-team and community interaction and development. Russ's drive and passion is to enable all software engineers to achieve incredible technical and business throughput via quality tooling and streamlined work process. Previously, Russ ran another successful startup delivering JavaScript continuous delivery solutions to hundreds of projects throughout Nike and did feature and infrastructure development for the Outlook and OneDrive consumer websites at Microsoft.

Nigel Simpson
Nigel Simpson, Director of Tech Strategy & Research at The Walt Disney Company

As Director of Tech Strategy & Research at The Walt Disney Company, Nigel Simpson leads a team that is future-focused; looking at the interplay of technology, culture, consumer behavior, and other factors, and exploring what it means to the company by mapping it into strategy, education, and tactical initiatives. As a pragmatic technologist, Nigel enjoys making sense of technology: cutting through the hype and explaining the relationship between vision and current and future potential. Nigel is passionate about all types of engineering and innovation. He established Disney’s Open Source Program in 2015 which is designed to enable developers while simultaneously managing risk. He also created an enterprise-wide developer productivity initiative that was designed to break down artificial barriers between business units, enabling collaboration around technology through the enterprise adoption of open source community concepts and tools.

Prior to joining Disney, Nigel had a 20-year career at Sun Microsystems, where he began by answering the phones as a technical support engineer and ended up as a researcher in Sun Labs. While at Sun Labs, he co-developed Open Wonderland, an open source, immersive 3D virtual world designed for distance collaboration.

Nigel is a long-term mentor to aspiring young engineers. He’s currently mentoring STEM startups through LearnLaunch, an Accelerator program for EdTech startups. He is also mentoring high school students via The Possible Project, a Cambridge, MA-based after school program that teaches students with untapped potential entrepreneurship, technical, and business skills. Nigel graduated from Imperial College, London with a degree in Computing Science. He is co-inventor on and holds multiple patents in areas that include virtual worlds, voice interaction, and electronic communications.

What is the InnerSource Commons?

The InnerSource Commons (InnerSourceCommons.org) aka ISC is a consortium of representatives from over sixty companies and institutions. It utilizes open source methods to provide organizations pursuing inner sourcing a forum for discussing and improving the practice of InnerSource through the sharing of experiences (under the Chatham House Rule), creation and review of InnerSource patterns, and the open exchange of ideas.
